‘Claiming Open Spaces’ A Documentary Screening + Panelist Discussion

April is World Landscape Architecture Month! We’ve got lots planned, including a documentary screening of ‘Claiming Open Spaces’ hosted by @ga_asla at @ugaced !

Join us for this 2-part event on Wednesday 4/13 and Thursday 4/14 to watch the documentary film and speak with our panelists as we dive into the topic of race and space. ‘Claiming Open Spaces’ was directed and produced by landscape architect Austin Allen. The documentary explores the African-American experience in parks across multiple cities; including Detroit, New Orleans, and Montgomery. It is both a celebration of Black culture and an examination of how at times city planning has worked to diminish and exclude it.

Austin Allen is an Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington. He was Associate Professor at Louisiana State University’s School of Landscape Architecture. He was also Associate Professor/Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Colorado, Denver and an Associate Professor of Film/Communication at Cleveland State University. Allen is on the Board for the Landscape Architecture Foundation (@lafoundation ) and the Black Landscape Architects Network (@blacklanetwork ). He is on the Honorary Committee for Olmsted 200, celebrating Frederick Law Olmsted.

Join us Thursday, April 14 to hear directly from him. Stay tuned to see who else will be joining the conversation!
