National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative: Stephen Busch

As part of the National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative, with Green School Yards America, Stephen Busch created three concept planning scenarios for potential outdoor learning spaces for High Point Elementary School in Sandy Springs.

Outdoor learning is important because distance learning massively exacerbates the inequities in our education system. There are still many students who do not have access to computers and reliable internet.

Repurposing outdoor spaces is also a cost-effective way to reduce the burden on indoor classrooms while providing fresh air, hands-on learning opportunities, and the health benefits associated with increased access to nature.

After studying the characteristics of the site including topography, climate, noise, accessibility, and the student population Stephen came up with these scenarios for the school to utilize and to help plan for the future. Check out the scenarios above.
